Summer of Slammers Flies the Unfriendly Skies

Sometimes its just a road, and other times its not.  Eaglewing VTOL transports ferry troops forward along a main arterial road to the front

Its safe here, the VTOLs don't even need an escort

Modern warfare can change that in an instant.  Peace is shattered by an advancing column of Free Foreign Legion (FFL) armour

Gun jeeps and drones act as recce

Medium armour screens the command group

Heavy MBTs and Tank Destroyers flank the hills

The Waldheim Dragoons can only muster a single Medium tank Troop in defense, they have to hold while reinforcements rush in

The Dragoons Troop lies in wait behind a hill

The FFL armour ranges forwards seeking new targets

The Dragoons unmask and engage

Boom! First kill, a FFL MBT KOd

Hit, Overkill, Boom!

The other Dragoons KO'd a main gun on one other tank and destroyed a missile jeep

FFL heavies surge forwards to exact their revenge

 Missiles away!

Heavy powerguns blaze, destroying one Dragoon vehicle, the others remain unscathed

The command vehicle and remaining missile jeep assumes control of the drones, pulling them back into hull-down positions

Drones drop into ridges on the hill

Missile swarm away!

Drozd shoot down incoming

One missile gets through and slams into the top of the tank, destroying it

Dragoon reinforcements appear, a troop of heavy MBTs

The heavies move into firing positions

BOOM! BOOM! FFL lose two heavies and a medium MBT

The surviving medium MBTs retreat to cover before firing

KABOOM, a shot slices through a Dragoon Heavy MBT

Missile out

The Dragoon's command group appears on the horizon

Meanwhile, FFL missiles all whiff.  Dragoons win initiative and opt to pile on the misery

KABOOOOOOOM, twice, really.

Medium MBTS keep up the retreat

Missiles away

KA-SPLAT!  Top attack missile takes out the last Dragoon medium MBT

FFL missiles from the jeeps whiff (again), Dragoon heavies advance to gain shots

Predictable, Boom, Boom, and more.  All FFL MBTs lost, drones down too

The FFL commander opts to retreat with the remains of the FFL force

This is going to be a tough one to explain

Waldheim Dragoons win the day, but the cost is high

Hulks litter the battlefield

Both sides took a beating

Ah tanks, I thought it was time for a break from infantry and where better for a tank battle than the equatorial deserts.  Cover was minimal, this was a pure slug fest, and what fun it was too.

And finally, a quick word about my toys.  The FFL and Commonwealth forces do not appear in the Slammers at all.  When I started playing the Crucible rules I was using the kit I had, most of which was older GZG and Brigade vehicles.  I've been playing with them as FFL and Commonwealth for years,  all I did was badge them up using HS decals from Ainsty and I had two ready-made forces to use.  Since then I've rebadged these green and brown Old Crow vehicles into being the Waldheim Dragoons, this is why they don't use the cannon blower tanks.  I do have blowers, they are next in the painting queue, just need to finish the Wolverines and a few more Dragoons then its Slammers time.

Summer of Slammer Strikes Back

The Commonwealth Marines got booted from their nice valley.  They are not too happy about that.

The Free Foreign Legion have better things to do so have subcontracted the defense of the valley to the Wolverines and Guardforce O'Higgins.

Wolverines dig their guns in at the end of the valley

Heavy powerguns are trained down the valley

Guns are well hidden by the trees (acts as extra cover)

A command unit controls two tribarrels for air defense.  A light reaction platoon is ready to defend the guns if need be.  Tow vehicles are off-board (Ok, in they are still in the painting queue!)

Guardforce O'Higgins occupies the hilltop with a pair of dug-in tribarrels

The stillness of the valley is disturbed by VTOL drones

Two Recce and two attack drones scope out the defenders setup

Not for much longer, the tribarrels swing into action (Commonwealth loses the initiative)

Drones down!  The tribarrels make short work of the drones

A little later...  A heavy Commonwealth battle group enters the valley, MBTs charge down the road

Support AFVs and IFVs assault the hill

MBTs mean business...

Errrrrr.... ...guarding this hill may no be such a plum posting after all

Wolverines win initiative and open up with all the heavy guns.  They miss with all but one, and the best that does is to KO the main gun of one of the Bengal MBTs

Ouch!

We got him, we got him!

MBTs return fire destroying one gun and suppressing others

Burning as powergun rounds cook off

Get yer head down!  The Medium MBTs engage the guns

Final tally, two guns KO, one suppressed.  It could have been much worse.

Sighting on guns way off down the road

Guardforce O'Higgins jockeys into position to unleash buzzbomb hell!

NOOOOOOO.  one measly hit, another main gun KO

Still, that's way better than this group managed.  No hits, nope, none at all.  That's going to come back and haunt them

Wolverines win initiative again, and BOOM!  Powerguns reach out and connect, two MBTs down

Got him this time!

Behind the hill its ZOOM time, IFVs surge forward pouring mass-driver rounds into the dug in infantry.  AS soon as the IFVs slam to a halt the infantry hatches pop and out pour the Commonwealth assault force, assault rifles at the ready

Sarge, perhaps we surrender now?

The Commonwealth assault mows down the Guardforce troops, causing them to break (>50% casualties)

Massacre on the ridge

Meanwhile, the Wolverines still lead a (relatively) charmed life, no effective fire, only suppression

Commonwealth win initiative and advance

MBTs bead in on the Wolverines

BOOM, BOOM! both guns down

However, the MBTs have made a mistake ,they have strayed into buzzbomb range

FIRE! and miss...

But wait, penetration is max

With overkill this means...

KABOOM!, another MBT down, breaking the unit.  This game's not over after all

Commonwealth infantry remount, IFVs charge across the grass pumping mass-diver rounds downrange

DUCK!

The Wolverines infantry is exposed

The MDC rounds tear into the Wolverines, gunning down the platoon

With no FFL in sensor range, the demise of the Wolverines and the surrender of Guardforce O'Higgins the valley is now firmly in the hands of the Commonwealth

Fast and fun.  OK, so perhaps an atypical Slammers game as there isn't much armour, OK I'll admit that.  I wanted to try out kit I've not played with much, this was the first time I've tried out fixed guns and I'm still enjoying the infantry aspects of the game.

What's next?  Maybe its time to pull those huge tanks out, I've some Khurasan Sillers somewhere...
